NYU media studies professor Mark Crispin Miller, who Piers mentions a couple times, looked into the origins of the press using “conspiracy theorist” as a smear epithet, after he published “Fooled Again” about the stolen 2004 election and became puzzled by himself being smeared by the term (by the “left” press, curiously).
He did a search of NYT, Washington Post etc, and found the term had hardly ever been used in print until 1967 when credible, popular books began to come out critical of the Warren Commission.
Since declassified CIA memo 1035-960 specifically directs AP station chiefs to weaponize the term to discredit and marginalize.
Miller encouraged his colleague Lance deHaven Smith to write his book Conspiracy Theory in America, which traces the history of the lauded July 4 1776 “conspiracy theorists” we celebrate every year to the term’s weaponization after the Warren Commission and beyond
